Welcome to the Richborough Energy Park website which sets out our proposals to redevelop the derelict, brownfield power station site as a new hub for green energy production. In May 2011, we hosted a number of public exhibitions in the local area to allow people to view our emerging plans and comment on them. We were very pleased that so many people were able to attend, meet members of the project team and talk to us. Since then we have been reviewing the feedback we received, holding further meetings with stakeholders such as local councillors and discussing the changing requirements of our partners, including National Grid. We hope to be able publish updated proposals in Spring 2012.
An essential requirement of the plan for redeveloping the site is the demolition of all the remaining structures. During summer 2011 all small buildings and structures were demolished by our contractors DDS. In January 2012 we received planning consent to demolish the three cooling towers and chimney. The demolition will take place in the early Spring 2012 and will be carried out by specialist demolition engineers in accordance with the conditions of the planning consent.
"Becoming a low carbon economy will be one of the greatest changes our country has ever known. But it is a change for the better, for our economy, our society, and for the planet"
Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Prime Minister (March 2011)
“The Government believe that sustainable bioenergy, such as woody biomass, bioliquids and many other bioenergy forms, could contribute up to half the UK's target of 15% renewable energy by 2020. That would deliver a greenhouse gas saving of 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2020. It would also improve the UK's security of supply, as bioenergy is one of the few renewables that can generate energy on demand.”
Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change (16 December 2010)
